Title Hidden VOC Risks in Newly Renovated Indoor Environments
Introduction EMSL Analytical provides laboratory testing services, air monitoring instruments, and sampling supplies to help identify indoor air quality concerns in homes, schools, offices, and other buildings.

Cinnaminson, New Jersey, September 23, 2026

As summer renovation projects continue into August, indoor air quality (IAQ) experts at EMSL Analytical, Inc. are reminding property managers, school administrators, contractors, and business owners about the potential health risks associated with volatile organic compounds (VOCs), including formaldehyde, in newly renovated indoor environments.

Renovation and remodeling projects often include new flooring, furniture, cabinetry, paints, coatings, adhesives, and composite wood products. These materials can release VOCs into indoor air for days, weeks, or even months after installation. Without adequate ventilation and post-renovation testing, concentrations may build up and negatively impact indoor air quality, contributing to occupant discomfort and complaints.

Exposure to VOCs such as formaldehyde has been linked to eye, nose, and throat irritation, headaches, dizziness, respiratory symptoms, and worsening of asthma and other pre-existing conditions. Sensitive groups, including children and individuals with respiratory conditions, may be especially at risk in these environments.

“Renovation projects can greatly improve indoor spaces, but they can also introduce chemical contaminants that are not always readily detected by building occupants,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Post-renovation indoor air quality testing helps identify potential issues early and supports healthier environments.”

To support these needs, EMSL Analytical offers comprehensive laboratory testing services to detect formaldehyde and other VOCs in air samples. Their laboratories analyze samples collected from a wide range of building types to help assess exposure concerns and support IAQ investigations.

In addition, EMSL provides air sampling media, passive badges, and other sampling supplies used to collect VOC samples in the field. The company also offers advanced air monitoring instruments that support real-time IAQ assessments and long-term monitoring programs for consultants, industrial hygienists, and facility managers.
