October is National Children’s Health Month, an opportunity to raise awareness about environmental factors that can affect children. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), children can be more vulnerable to pollutants than adults because of differences in biology and behavior, which can result in greater exposure or unique windows of susceptibility.

Both indoor and outdoor environmental quality can play an important role in protecting children’s health. Potential concerns can include mold and other biological contaminants, lead, asbestos, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), radon, poor indoor air quality, and other environmental hazards. Outdoor air quality can also be a concern, particularly during wildfire smoke events and other conditions that can increase air pollution.
