H. Pylori Testing – Helicobacter pylori Laboratory Testing & Detection

H. Pylori Testing Services – Environmental Laboratory Analysis

EMSL Analytical provides laboratory testing expertise for environmental and microbiological investigations. Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a bacterium best known for its association with human gastrointestinal infections, including chronic gastritis and peptic ulcer disease. Detecting and understanding this microorganism is important in clinical research, public health, and investigations into potential environmental exposure pathways.

Environmental testing for H. pylori may involve specialized analytical methods designed to detect bacterial genetic material in collected samples. The availability of H. pylori-specific testing, acceptable sample matrices, and analytical methods should be confirmed with EMSL before submitting samples.

EMSL Analytical has served the environmental testing industry since 1981, providing microbiological laboratory expertise and analytical services to environmental professionals, businesses, institutions, and other organizations.

Contact EMSL Analytical to discuss your H. pylori testing requirements and determine whether an appropriate laboratory method is available for your project.

What Is Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori)?

Helicobacter pylori is a spiral-shaped, Gram-negative bacterium that can colonize the human stomach. It is associated with several gastrointestinal conditions, including:

  • Chronic gastritis and inflammation of the stomach lining

  • Gastric and duodenal ulcers

  • Increased risk of gastric cancer

  • Gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma

H. pylori infection is common worldwide. Transmission is believed to occur primarily through person-to-person contact, although contaminated food and water have been investigated as possible transmission pathways.

The presence of H. pylori DNA in an environmental sample does not necessarily establish that viable bacteria are present or that exposure has occurred.

H. Pylori Water Testing and Environmental Detection

Researchers have investigated whether Helicobacter pylori may be present in drinking water, untreated water, wastewater, and other environmental sources.

Environmental investigations may evaluate water quality, microbial contamination, and potential sources of bacterial exposure.

Potential applications for specialized H. pylori analysis include:

  • Drinking water research

  • Well water investigations

  • Wastewater and sewage research

  • Environmental microbiology studies

  • Water distribution system investigations

  • Public health research

  • Research involving potential waterborne exposure pathways

Important: H. pylori is not a standard drinking water compliance indicator. Routine coliform and E. coli testing does not specifically detect H. pylori.

Why Choose EMSL Analytical for Microbiological Testing?

Since 1981, EMSL Analytical has provided laboratory testing services for environmental and industrial applications.

EMSL Analytical Advantages

  • Extensive environmental laboratory experience

  • Broad microbiological testing expertise

Frequently Asked Questions About H. Pylori Testing

What is H. pylori testing?

H. pylori testing involves detecting the bacterium Helicobacter pylori or evidence of its presence. Clinical testing identifies infections in people, while specialized environmental analysis may investigate the organism in water or other samples.

Can H. pylori be found in drinking water?

H. pylori genetic material has been reported in some water investigations. However, the role of drinking water in transmitting H. pylori infection remains uncertain, and DNA detection does not necessarily indicate viable bacteria.
